our Rescue Method

Rescue

We rescue sick, abused, neglected, vulnerable animals including, but not limited to dogs, cats and rabbits.

Recover

With the help of our trusted vets, all animals are offered food, medication and a place of safety at Urban Tails.

rehabilitate

Many of our rescues require intensive rehabilitation and specialist treatment after abuse or injury.

Rehome

The best outcome for any animal is to be welcomed into a loving home and be part of a family.

Our History, Vision And Values

Tanzania, in Africa, has a population of over 55 million people who generally view street dogs as “dirty”. Because of this many suffer severe neglect, starvation, violent injury, and even death.

In 2016, Ismael Mungaya brought home his first rescue dog. She had recently given birth to 4 pups on the street.

In his first year alone, he was able to rescue over 30 dogs.

We promote...

Ever since that first rescue in 2016 Ismael has been bringing stray and abused dogs home and now operates a small, non-profit rescue shelter called URBAN TAilS on his parents’ property in Arusha.

Cats, kittens and rabbits are also rescued and cared for.

The ultimate aim is to find a warm loving home for each of them or, at very least, a loving foster home where they can be safely cared for until a fur-ever home is found.

...and prevent.

URBAN TAilS is also trying to change the negative perceptions that people have of dogs in his community by educating the younger generation on how to care for animals.

Sponsored kennels, collars and leads are also given to owners who could not otherwise afford them.

Regular outreaches monitor and feed stray animals in the area.

In the beginning

Ismael’s mother remembers the day he brought home his first rescue, which he called Tina. His father was not happy.

“He felt very sad for her,” Ismael’s mother recalls “He took them [Tina and her puppies] home where he built a small box to cover them from the rain, and he continued to feed them.”

In a dramatic event, Tina then ran away for a brief time and was shot in the leg and neck. Fortunately, a friend of Ismael’s found her, rushed her to the vet and she was able to survive.

Today, Ismael is operating his non-profit rescue shelter called URBAN TAilS on his parents property in Arusha, Tanzania.

He now has the full support of his family for the amazing work that he is doing.
